Confirmed: Arsenal reveal shirt number for new summer signing
Arsenal have confirmed that summer signing Bernd Leno will wear the No.19 shirt for this coming campaign after joining the club from Bayer Leverkusen.
After weeks of speculation, Leno completed his move to Arsenal from Leverkusen on June 19th to become Unai Emery’s second signing of the summer since replacing Arsene Wenger as manager.
Emery targetted a new goalkeeper as David Ospina is expected to leave this summer while Petr Cech’s form has slowly declined over the past two seasons so a long-term replacement was needed.
Many fans hoped that Leno would take the No.1 shirt from Cech but the young German has been handed 19 instead – with the club saying on Arsenal.com that he chose the number as it reflects the day he signed for us and he made his first team debut aged 19.
The likelihood is Leno was forced to take a high number because the club wouldn’t take the No.1 off Cech but hopefully he settles well in north London and takes the No.1 next summer.

Leno will train with his new team mates for the first time at London Colney today and he’ll be looking to make a good impression on Emery and his staff ahead of the new season.
Fellow summer signing Sokratis will wear the No.5 shirt this season while Stephan Lichtsteiner took the No.12 shirt. Lucas Torreira is expected to join from Sampdoria this week so it will be interesting to see which number he takes.
No.3 and No.11 are available from the first team numbers but I can’t see the defensive midfielder opting for either of those and the next available number is 24.
