Arsenal trying to sign world class £87m-rated La Liga star – report
According to a report in the Mirror, Arsenal are among the clubs trying to sign £87m-rated Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak at the end of the season.
We now know for certain that Arsene Wenger will be leaving the club this summer but whoever replaces him has a huge rebuilding job to do and a new number one has to be a priority.
Petr Cech has become a liability at times this season with the 35-year-old making a number of high profile errors while David Ospina is nowhere near good enough to command the first team shirt.
So a new keeper is desperately needed and AS, via the Mirror, claim that Arsenal are one of the clubs who’ve expressed their interest in signing Oblak from Atletico Madrid.
However, we’ll face plenty of competition as the Spanish publication names Liverpool, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain as rival clubs who’re also vying for the 25-year-old’s signature.
Not only that, but the newspaper says Oblak still has over three years left on his contract so Atletico will demand the full value of his release clause – which is set at just over £87m.
Obviously it’s difficult to see Arsenal paying that kind of money for a goalkeeper but if we did have a spare £87m kicking about then we’d do a lot worse than spending it on Oblak.
The Slovenian international has proven himself to be a world class keeper over the past few years and he’s kept 26 clean sheets this season alone, with Atletico conceding just 18 La Liga goals so far this campaign!
Compare that to the 46 Arsenal have shipped in the Premier League and you can start to appreciate the difference a top class keeper like Oblak could make to our squad.
We’ll find out first hand just how good Oblak is as we face Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the Europa League on Thursday evening. Let’s hope he has an off night….
