Arsenal ready to sign £25m Italian star to replace error-prone Mustafi
According to TeamTalk, Arsenal are looking to sign £25m-rated Juventus defender Daniele Rugani this summer as we try to replace error-prone centre-back Shkodran Mustafi.
Arsenal desperately need to sort out their defence as we’ve conceded 45 Premier League goals already this season – 20 more than champions Manchester City – and Mustafi has been hugely inconsistent all campaign.
The German international produced almost identical errors during our recent games with Southampton and Newcastle which both led to goals and it’s safe to say he’s been a poor £35m signing following his arrival from Valencia.
Per Mertesacker is set to retire in June, Laurent Koscielny has been hampered by an Achilles injury all season while Calum Chambers and Rob Holding have shown little to suggest they are the answer to our defensive problems.
So we need to sign at least one new centre-back this summer and TeamTalk are citing a report from Transfermarketweb that claims Arsenal are ready to renew their interest in Rugani.
We’ve been strongly linked with the 23-year-old in recent transfer windows with the players agent, Davide Torchia, confirming our interest in January but no formal offer has ever been put on the table.
However, that could all be about to change as the report says Arsenal want to finally sign Rugani this summer and are ready to press ahead with a deal that could cost around £25m.
Rugani has struggled to hold on to a first team place at Juventus as Medhi Benatia and Giorgio Chiellini are Max Allegri’s first choice pairing which has restricted the youngster to making just 17 starts in all competitions.
He’s tipped to become a regular with the Italian national team if he’s given a chance to develop but it doesn’t look like he’ll get that opportunity in Turin so he could be open to the idea of a fresh challenge.
However, we aren’t the only club in the running as the report says Manchester United are also showing an interest in signing Rugani so we may have to battle it out with our rivals if the defender decides to come to England this summer.
