[Player Ratings] Arsenal 3-2 Southampton: Mustafi woeful but Welbeck shines for Gunners

By on April 8, 2018

Arsenal came from behind to beat Southampton 3-2 in an eventful game at the Emirates this afternoon.

We gave away another cheap goal thanks to some shocking defending from Mustafi but goals from Aubameyang and Welbeck turned things around before half time.

More poor defending allowed Southampton to equalise midway through the second half but we found a winner as Welbeck headed home in the 81st minute.

Here are my ratings:

Cech  6.5/10 | Let down by Mustafi for the opening goal and made a couple of solid saves in the second half.

Bellerin  6/10 | Cleared a goal-bound shot off the line at 0-0 and put in a few decent deliveries.

Chambers  5/10 | Ripped apart for the second Southampton goal and was dragged out of position too often.

Mustafi  4/10 | Shocking ‘defending’ for the opening goal. Schoolboy stuff. Another off day from the German.

Kolasinac  6/10 | Was reasonably solid defensively but didn’t really influence things going forward.

Elneny  6/10 | Tidy performance and went about his business efficiently until he stupidly got himself sent off for a petulant push at the death.

Xhaka  7/10 | Good overall performance. Almost scored a fine goal early in the second half and moved the ball well.

Iwobi  7.5/10 | Lively display and his best for some time. Played a key role in our first goal and set-up Welbeck for the winner.

Nelson  6/10 | Great to see the youngster make his league debut. Showed flashes of his quality but struggled to get in the game at times. More to come from him.

Welbeck  8/10 | Lovely assist for Aubameyang’s goal and made it 2-1 with a deflected effort from the edge of the area. Missed a sitter just minutes before heading home the winner late on. Best performance for months.

Aubameyang  7/10 | Scored to make it 1-1 with a strikers finish and make it 6 goals in 7 appearances. was a handful throughout.

Subs:

Wilshere  4/10 | Poor cameo again as his passing was sloppy. He just looked like he wanted a scrap.

Lacazette  5/10 | Didn’t really have much of an impact after replacing Auba.

It was another far from convincing performance but we dug deep to secure our sixth consecutive win in all competitions and keep the pressure on Chelsea. Next up, a trip to Russia on Thursday night…
