Cazorla replacement? Arsenal working on deal to sign 22-year-old midfielder

By on February 12, 2018

According to the Daily Star, Arsenal are working on a deal to sign Schalke midfielder Max Meyer on a free transfer at the end of the season but we’ll face stiff competition for his signature.

Meyer has been with Schalke his entire career having progressed through the youth ranks and is considered as one of the best young players in German football right now.

The 22-year-old made his name as an attacking midfielder but he’s excelled since being moved back in to a deeper midfield role and he’s already represented Germany at senior international level.

Arsene Wenger has been tracking the youngster for some time and it looks like we’ve stepped-up our interest as Meyer is out-of-contract in June and is showing no sign of penning an extension despite Schalke’s best efforts to tie him down to a new deal.

The Daily Star claim that Wenger has made Meyer his number one summer transfer target and is already working hard on a deal to lure the German star to the Emirates on a free transfer at the end of the season.

If true, then I’d guess Wenger sees Meyer as the ideal replacement for Santi Cazorla as the Spaniard is increasingly unlikely to play for Arsenal again due to his on-going ankle injury woes.

Meyer would be a superb coup if we could pull it off as he’s one of the best young talents in Europe. He could be the deep-lying playmaker we’ve been looking for in recent years as it’s safe to say Granit Xhaka has been a huge disappointment.

However, understandably, we aren’t the only club in the running as the newspaper says Liverpool, Bayern Munich and AC Milan are also tracking Meyer’s signature this summer.

Let’s hope Mesut Ozil can persuade him to join Arsenal….
