BBC journalist: Arsenal working on late swoop to sign Serie A centre-back
BBC journalist David Ornstein claims Arsenal are looking to sign a centre-back before the window closes with Kostas Manolas and David Luiz the key targets.
Arsenal have dominated the news so far on deadline day after wrapping-up the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang while Olivier Giroud has completed his move to Chelsea.
However, it seems Arsene Wenger may not be done as Ornstein claims he’s heard whispers that the club are looking to bring in a central defender before the window closes.
The BBC journalist says Arsenal enquired about taking Luiz as part of the deal that’s seen Olivier Giroud join Chelsea but those discussions failed to progress.
But Manolas remains a target and it looks like Wenger has renewed his interest in the Greek international having been an admirer ever since he played for Olympiakos in 2014.
Ornstein tweeted:
Hearing whispers (nothing concrete) Arsenal have been exploring possibility of signing David Luiz from Chelsea as part of Giroud deal – as per @DavidWoodsStar yesterday – or Roma’s Kostas Manolas. Would be one or other, no idea if it will happen. Defence a clear concern #AFC #CFC

As widely reported by others, Chelsea have signed France striker Olivier Giroud from Arsenal for a fee in the region of £18m. #CFC defender David Luiz is staying at Stamford Bridge #AFC #DeadlineDay

Manolas has developed in to one of the best centre-backs in Europe since joining Roma and I think the 26-year-old would be a superb signing for the club if we could somehow get a deal agreed.
The window closes at 11pm tonight so time is running out but I would love to see Wenger bring in a centre-back such as Manolas before the end of the month. If not, then a defensive midfielder would be ideal as I think it’s obvious we have at least two huge holes in the squad that need to be filled.
If nothing comes of the talks for Monalas then I wouldn’t be surprised if we see reports suggesting we’ll be back in for Jonny Evans….
