Arsenal working on late swoop to sign German midfielder – reports

By on January 31, 2018

According to reports in Germany via the Mirror, Arsenal are trying to pull-off a late swoop on Schalke to sign midfielder Max Meyer before the window closes.

Meyer has been with Schalke his entire career having progressed through the youth ranks and is considered as one of the best young players in German football right now.

The 22-year-old has been a firm fixture in the Schalke team in recent years and has also represented Germany at senior level so he’s certainly got a huge future ahead of him if he stays on the right track.

The youngster made his name as an attacker but he’s excelled this season in a deeper midfield role and it looks like he’s caught the attention of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

The Mirror are citing a report coming from Bild that claims Arsenal are trying to pull-off a last gasp swoop to lure Meyer to the Emirates before the window closes tonight.

Meyer is out of contract in June and has so far refused to sign an extension so Schalke may decide to cash-in rather than risk losing him for nothing in the summer.

The reports come after Sky Sports pundit Guillem Balague claimed that Arsenal were working on a secret second deadline day deal after wrapping-up the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang earlier today.

He tweeted:

Could Meyer be this mystery deal? It’s certainly a possibility as Arsenal are crying out for another midfielder and Meyer could be viewed as a replacement for Granit Xhaka.

The Swiss international has been heavily criticised in recent weeks for some shocking displays so I’d welcome the addition of another deep lying playmaker – especially as Santi Cazorla’s career looks over.
