Arsenal table £10m bid to sign international star as Wenger eyes third signing
According to the Daily Star, Arsenal have now formalised their interest in signing Jonny Evans after submitting a £10m plus Mathieu Debuchy offer to West Brom.
Arsene Wenger is in the market for another centre-back as Per Mertesacker is due to retire in June, Laurent Koscielny is plagued by an Achilles injury while neither Calum Chambers nor Rob Holding have shown any sort of consistency at the back.
Evans was strongly linked with a move to north London in the summer when Shkodran Mustafi’s future was in doubt and it seems we’ve renewed our interest in signing the Northern Ireland international this month.
After weeks of speculation, the Daily Star claim Arsenal have now tested West Brom’s resolve with a low-ball £10m offer which also includes taking Debuchy off our hands.
Evans has been valued at around £25m in the newspapers but it looks like Arsenal are trying to secure a bargain as we know the defender has a £3m release clause in his contract if West Brom get relegated.
The newspaper says the club are also aware that the Baggies are strapped for cash and Alan Pardew needs to sell if he’s to have any money available to rebuild his squad with.
Pardew is quoted by the Daily Star as saying earlier this month:
“The position at this football club financially is very, very tight. We might have to move a player out to bring players in.
“I’m saying we need to bring players in. We have to be on our guard for a bid of any player that might interest us.”
I think it’s safe to assume that West Brom will reject our paltry opening offer and hold out for more than £10m but at least it seems Arsenal are serious about strengthening our defence this month.
If we’re successful in landing Evans he’ll become our third January signing following the arrivals of Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
