Arsenal in talks to sign defender as Wenger closes-in on £75m double swoop

By on January 24, 2018

According to the Telegraph, Arsenal have renewed their interest in signing Jonny Evans as Arsene Wenger looks to sign the West Brom defender and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a £75m double swoop this month.

We were strongly linked with Evans during the summer after it emerged that Shkodran Mustafi could be heading to Inter Milan but the Baggies refused to do business and Mustafi stayed at the Emirates.

However, the Telegraph are one of several media outlets reporting today that we’ve now renewed our interest in Evans after opening talks with West Brom over a potential £20m deal.

Manchester City have also been linked with Evans but the run-away league leaders have turned their attention to Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte, paving the way for Arsenal.

West Brom – who currently sit second bottom of the table – could be ready to cash-in as Evans reportedly has a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave for just £3m if they were relegated this season.

New boss Alan Pardew could also use the funds to reinvest in his squad this month so a deal could suit all parties as Wenger looks to add a new centre-back to his ranks.

Per Mertesacker is due to retire in June, Laurent Koscielny is plagued by an Achilles injury while neither Calum Chambers nor Rob Holding have shown any sort of consistency at the back so Evans could be a solid addition to the squad.

And he isn’t the only player we’re closing-in on as the Telegraph claim Arsenal are also in advanced talks with Borussia Dortmund to sign Aubameyang as we look to pull-off a £75m double swoop before the end of the month.

Chief exec Ivan Gazidis, head scout Sven Mislintat and lawyer Huss Fahmy are all in Germany holding talks with Dortmund and the paper says we’ve tabled a second offer worth around £50m.

It’s reported that Dortmund value Aubameyang at closer to £60m but there is confidence that a compromise deal will be found with Olivier Giroud possibly heading to Germany on loan.

So it looks like this is shaping-up to be a busy few days and if we can sign Aubameyang and Evans on top of swapping Henrikh Mkhitaryan for Alexis Sanchez, this would be our best transfer windows in recent memory.
