Arsenal on verge of agreeing £25m deal to sign international star

By on January 6, 2018

According to The Sun, Arsenal are on the verge of agreeing a £25m deal with West Bromwich Albion for the signing of defender Jonny Evans.

We were strongly linked with Evans during the summer transfer window and reportedly saw a bid rejected on deadline day after then manager Tony Pulis refused to sell.

However, Pulis has since moved on and The Sun claim new manager Alan Pardew is keen to reshape his squad this winter and he needs funds to do so.

Therefore, he’s reluctantly ready to cash-in on Evans and it looks like Arsenal are set to beat Man City to his signature as the newspaper says we’re close to agreeing a £25m deal with the Baggies.

Evans was keen on a move during the summer so should jump at the chance to join Arsenal this month as he knows this is probably his last chance to rejoin a big club after leaving Man Utd in 2015.

The Northern Ireland international has been in excellent form for West Brom over the past two-and-a-half years and he would be a solid signing if Arsenal manage to get this deal over the line.

However, I must admit his signing would be a bit of a surprise as Evans just turned 30 and it would be very un-Wenger-like for us to spend £25m on a player who’s approaching the final years of his career.

Nevertheless, we need to find a replacement for Per Mertesacker as he’s about to retire in a few months while Laurent Koscielny is plagued by an on-going Achilles injury and Evans will be able to slot straight in to the team.

Let’s see what happens over the coming days but it looks like we could be about to make our first major signing of the January window.
