Arsenal on verge of signing Barcelona target after offering huge wage packet
According to The Sun, Arsenal are set to beat-off competition from the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United to sign Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free transfer.
Goretzka is one of the most exciting young players in European football and has been a key player for Schalke in recent years after joining the club from Bochum in 2013.
The 22-year-old is out of contract in June and has attracted interest from a whole host of top clubs including Arsenal, Barcelona, Man Utd, Man City and Real Madrid [via The Sun].
However, it seems Arsenal are now in pole position as The Sun claims Arsene Wenger is confident he’s won the race to sign the German international on a free transfer next summer.
The newspaper says Arsenal have managed to beat-off the competition and tempt Goretzka to the Emirates with a huge signing-on bonus and a sizeable wage packet.
If this report is accurate and we sign Goretzka it would be a major coup for the club as he’s a top class midfielder who’s capable of playing in a variety of positions so he’d be an excellent addition to the squad.
With Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil both tipped to leave over the coming months, Wenger is under pressure to find replacements and it would be an astute piece of business if he could snap Goretzka up on a free transfer.
However, I wouldn’t be getting too excited just yet as this report is coming from The Sun and surely the likes of City, Utd and Barca will also be willing to pay Goretzka huge wages?
So until we see an official announcement or something more concrete come out, I’ll hold fire on getting my Goretzka shirt just yet.
