Cazorla replacement? Arsenal lining-up swoop for Real Madrid target
According to a report in the Daily Mail, Arsenal are lining-up a swoop for Italian midfielder Jorginho after his hugely impressive start to the new season with Napoli.
Jorginho has played a key role in Napoli’s sensational campaign so far with the deep-lying midfielder helping Maurizio Sarri’s side win 10 of their 11 Serie A games to sit top of the table.
The 25-year-old has made over 100 appearances for Napoli since joining the club from Verona in January 2014 and he’s now an Italian international having opted to represent them ahead of birth-place Brazil.
The midfielders potential caught the attention of Arsene Wenger with his agent, Joao Santos, confirming earlier this year that Arsenal had expressed an interest in the player.
However, we aren’t the only big European club to have sounded out Jorginho as his agent also revealed that Real Madrid are sniffing around.
Santos is quoted as saying in March by the Daily Mail:
‘Interest from Arsenal? It’s true. After the game against Palermo, compliments arrived from Real Madrid as well.’
It looks like Wenger is ready to go after Jorginho’s signature as the Daily Mail cite reports coming out of Italy that claim Arsenal have stepped-up their interest and are lining-up a swoop ahead of next summer.
No potential fee is mentioned in the report but with Jorginho contracted to the Serie A leaders until 2020, I’m sure it would require a sizeable offer to persuade them to cash-in.
I’ve said for some time now that central midfield is a problem area for us as we’ve badly missed Santi Cazolra’s presence in the middle of the park over the past year.
The Spaniard is out of contract next summer, and given he’s set to turn 33 in December and has been plagued by Achilles injuries, I don’t see him signing a new deal.
Therefore, we desperately need a replacement for Cazorla who can instigate attacks from deep and Jorginho would be a superb signing if we could get a deal agreed with Napoli.
