Arsenal launch audacious bid to sign attacker, Wenger wants deal done in January
According to a report in the Express, Arsenal have made an opening offer to sign Anthony Martial as Arsene Wenger looks to sign the Manchester United attacker this winter.
Martial has endured a mixed time of things since joining United from Monaco in 2015. He was excellent under Louis van Gaal when he scored 17 goals during his debut campaign but struggled to impress Jose Mourinho last season.
The 21-year-old has now started to find his feet under the so-called ‘special one’ having provided 5 goals and 6 assists in his 9 appearances so far this term but there are still question marks over his long-term future.
It seems the uncertainty has alerted Arsenal as the Express are citing a report from Transfer Market Web that claims we’ve already made an opening offer for Martial’s signature.
With contract rebel Alexis Sanchez set to leave, possibly in January, Wenger needs to find a top class replacement and the newspaper says the boss wants to have a deal wrapped-up for Martial this winter.
The report doesn’t disclose what our supposed offer is worth but they do suggest that it is in excess of the £52m we paid for Alexandre Lacazette in the summer so it would be a club record deal if we could pull it off.
However, that isn’t going to be easy as the report indicates that United have already rejected our advances and Mourinho is highly unlikely to sanction a deal with his old foe Wenger.
The pair hate each other so even if Mourinho doesn’t see a long-term future for Martial at Old Trafford, I still don’t see him agreeing to sell such a talent to Wenger any time soon.
I’d love to see Martial come to Arsenal as he has the potential to be a world class attacker if he’s developed properly, but I’m certainly not getting my hopes up over a deal.
