Arsenal in battle with Man Utd to sign £55m attacker

By on August 18, 2017

According to the Daily Record, Arsenal are now facing a fierce battle with Manchester United over the signing of Monaco’s £55m-rated attacker Thomas Lemar.

Arsene Wenger has been tracking the French international all summer and at one point back in June it looked like a deal was close after we tabled two formal bids.

However, we failed to agree a fee with Monaco and the Ligue 1 champions are now reluctant to lose Lemar after seeing a number of their title-winning team depart this summer.

The Mirror reported earlier this week that Arsenal are still in talks with Monaco and are hopeful of eventually agreeing a deal to sign the 21-year-old during the closing stages of the transfer window.

But it looks like we’ll now face stiff competition as the Daily Record claim Man Utd are now lining-up a move for Lemar after identifying him as an alternative to Ivan Perisic.

Jose Mourinho is looking to sign a wide attacker this summer but they’ve struggled to agree terms with Inter Milan for No.1 target Perisic so it looks like United are now ready to hijack our attempts to sign Lemar.

The newspaper says Monaco are demanding around £55m – which is easily within United’s reach – while Lemar is seven years younger and will also command less wages than Perisic, so it’s an attractive deal for the Red Devils.

United are able able to offer the youngster Champions League football so it will be bad news for Arsenal if Mourinho does decide to step-up his interest in the Frenchman over the next fortnight.

Let’s hope this is just a smokescreen and United are threatening to move on to other targets in the hope that Inter will accept their bid for Perisic as Id be gutted if we missed out on Lemar to Mourinho.

He’s one of the best young attackers in the world and provided 14 goals and 17 assists last season alone, so I’d love to see him come to the Emirates this summer.
