Arsenal doing battle with Spurs to sign German attacker – reports

By on January 12, 2017

According to a report in the Metro, Arsenal are battling it out with Tottenham over the signature of highly-rated Freiburg attacker Maximilian Philipp.

The 22-year-old has developed in to one of the most promising young forward’s in German football in recent years having broken in to the Freiburg starting eleven in 2014.

Philipp has scored 5 goals and set up a further 3 for his team mates in his 15 appearances so far this season and he was a key factor in the clubs promotion to the Bundesliga last year.

It looks like the youngsters potential has caught the attention of Arsenal as the Metro are citing reports coming out from SportBild who claim that we’re among the clubs battling it out for his signature.

The newspaper reports that Philipp could be available for as little as £3.4m so he’d be a relative snip in today’s market but SportBild also say that we’re facing stiff competition from our north London rivals.

It’s not clear whether formal talks have been initiated yet but the paper does say that both Arsenal and Spurs are ‘on their way’ to securing a deal for the attacker, so it does appear that our interest is concrete.

Philipp is predominantly regarded as an attacking central midfielder but he’s also capable of playing up front or out on the wing so his versatility is sure to appeal to Arsene Wenger.

The boss suggested last week that he wouldn’t be doing any major business during this transfer window but perhaps he sees Philipp as one for the future and a player who wouldn’t be considered as a major signing.

We snapped up highly-rated full-back Cohen Bramall from non-league Hednesford Town last week but we’ll have to wait and see whether Philipp will be joining him in moving to the Emirates this month.
