Midfielder drops huge hint over possible £37m Arsenal move

By on January 20, 2016

We’ve got some very interesting quotes from Borussia Monchengladbach star Granit Xhaka after the midfielder suggested he wants to take Francis Coquelin’s shirt number at Arsenal.

Xhaka has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates in recent weeks with the Daily Star one of several media outlets reporting that we are leading the race for his signature.

The 23-year-old has emerged as one of the most exciting young midfielders in the Bundesliga over the past 18 months so understandably he won’t come cheap and the newspaper suggests it will take a bid of around £37m to persuade Monchengladbach to cash-in.

Earlier this week, rumours of a potential move intensified after the German outfits sporting director, Max Eberl, admitted they may be forced to sell if a ‘dizzy’ offer for Xhaka came in.

When asked about the midfielder leaving this month, Eberl was quoted as saying by the Mirror:

“It depends a bit on our own sporting success, it depends on Granit’s own performances and of course it depends on the figures.

“If they reach a certain level, then you could start to get dizzy. There are always situations in which every club would have to make considerations.”

With all the speculation surrounding his future, it’s no surprise that during an interview with German publication Tor Fabrik, the midfielder was quizzed about a potential move to Arsenal and his response was intriguing to say the least.

The Swiss international’s favourite shirt number is 34 and when asked what would happen if he was to join Arsenal, Xhaka said he’s already spoken to Francis Coquelin – who currently wears the No.34 shirt at Arsenal – and says the Frenchman has agreed to take another number.

“That was my first professional number at Basel,” he told Tor Fabrik.

“It’s even tattooed on my back. I would also like to wear it in the future.”

“It was also here in Gladbach, with Amin Younes. And at Arsenal Coquelin has it. I’ve spoken with him, he would like to take another number!”

Xhaka is almost certainly joking about speaking to Coquelin but his comments are still very interesting and I think it shows that he’s open to the idea of joining Arsenal, were the opportunity to present itself.

Usually when a player is asked a direct question about joining another team, he deflects the question, but Xhaka makes a ‘joke’ which clearly implies he’d like to join Arsenal and take Coquelin’s No.34 shirt.

We’ll have to wait and see if anything comes of this but rumours of Xhaka moving to the Emirates are only going to intensify further following his comments.
