Arsenal blow as Wenger confirms key man will miss Dinamo game
Arsenal have been dealt a blow with Arsene Wenger appearing to confirm that Per Mertesacker will miss Wednesday’s clash with Dinamo Zagreb due to a nasty virus.
Mertesacker has missed our last three matches after picking up the virus last month and it’s proving difficult to shake-off.
The German giant was pencilled in to return against Stoke at the weekend but once again the skipper was forced to sit in the stands as we secured a comfortable 2-0 victory.
Speaking after that match on Saturday afternoon, Wenger told reporters that Per has a ‘serious condition’ and was not ready to play, but he hopes to have the centre-back available again by the end of the week.
“With Mertesacker, it was a serious condition and he is not ready today to play.
“I believe by the end of the week he should be much better.” Wenger told the Daily Star
So if Mertesacker won’t be ready until the end of the week, then it looks like he’ll miss Wednesday’s trip to Croatia to take on Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.
This will obviously be a blow as we need his experience at the back but we should be able to cope just fine as Gabriel has been hugely impressive in his absence.
If Mertesacker does return to the squad for Saturday’s trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea, it will be interesting to see who the boss picks to start alongside Koscielny. I’d personally be tempted to stick with Gabriel…..
