Arsenal shareholder slams Wenger for refusing to spend £200m kitty

Arsene wenger

Well known celebrity Arsenal fan and shareholder Piers Morgan has launched a fierce attack on Arsene Wenger for his lack of transfer activity this summer.

A hugely disappointing summer ended with no further arrivals coming in on deadline day meaning we spent just over £10m on one signing; Petr Cech from Chelsea.

Most fans wanted a new top class striker as a minimum, while many others felt we also needed another defensive midfielder to have a squad really capable of challenging on all fronts this season.

Many names were linked, however, the window closed at 6pm last night and Arsenal had failed to sign a single outfield player during the entire summer, and understandably the boss is facing an angry backlash.

One fan who’s vented his anger is Piers Morgan with the celebrity supporter taking to talkSPORT this morning to lash out at Wenger for his inactivity this summer, claiming that Wenger’s refusal to use the reported £200m at his disposal will leave Arsenal fighting it out for fourth place again.

Morgan also called the boss stubborn, arrogant and claims he’s not the manager he was 10 years ago.

Here is a full transcript of what Morgan told talkSPORT:

“This was the season when all the excuses where supposed to be over.

“According to board member Lord Harris only last month, we have £200million sitting there and we can afford ‘any player in the world Wenger wants, other than possibly Messi and Ronaldo’.

“Yesterday the deadline elapsed and I spent more money buying a cup of coffee in Starbucks for £2.50 than Arsene Wenger spent in the window after initially buying Cech earlier in the summer.

“Wenger has spent £10m out of £200m at his disposal. Arsenal fans know what we need, we know we haven’t had a first class centre-forward since Van Persie betrayed us and went to Man United.

“We do not have a centre forward who is going to win us the league – Giroud will not win us the league.

“I cannot understand why Wenger would do this. Why, when we are on the cusp of potentially challenging again, when you have £200m at your disposal, do you literally do nothing?

“I think it’s a shameful abrogation of your duties as Arsenal manager, I think it is further indicative – to me – than he is not the Arsene Wenger he was ten years ago, and I’m afraid that because of his inaction in this transfer window, arsenal are likely to come third or fourth again or potentially slip out of the top four.

“The idea that we’re on anywhere the same level as Manchester City is laughable. I think we’ll be about 15 points adrift of City, minimum, this season and for me that’s inexcusable.

“I think Arsene Wenger was one of the greatest managers the world has ever seen for eight years, but for the next ten years he’s been unbelievably disappointing my eyes.

“This behaviour yesterday in the transfer window absolutely personifies the stubbornness, the arrogance, the intransigence and the ‘I know best’ mentality Wenger has.”

While I don’t necessarily agree with going on talks shows to slam the manager, it’s difficult to really argue with much of what Morgan has said here. It really is baffling why Wenger has chosen not to make further signings.

I’m sure he did want to sign world class players and no doubt he tried, but there is no excuse for not signing a single outfield player. None.

If Madrid refuse to sell Benzema, you suck it up and move on to another target. Not simply say we won’t sign anyone else because they aren’t as good. That makes no sense. We needed someone who’s an improvement on Giroud, and there were plenty of players we could have bought.

Even if Wenger had his heart set on Benzema, pay enough and Madrid would have caved. If Madrid say they don’t want to sell, make them by tabling £70m. You can’t have it all in life. You want a player so badly that you won’t buy anyone else then you’re going to have to pay over the odds to get your man.

The reported £200m ‘kitty’ is wide of the mark but we certainly had around £70m to spend, which is more than enough to buy a top class forward and even another defensive midfielder.

But once again it’s left unspent and we’ve got a squad two players short of being genuine title challengers…..

i despise the man but i have to agree with him. furthermore, he has invested his money into the club so he has every right to his opinion given that his cash is not being reinvested. i’d imagine i’d be even more livid if i had money invested in the club alongside my 40 years of unwavering support. this is the beginning of the end.

    I AGREE WITH PIERS,
DISGUSTING. HE WAS NEVER GOING TO BUY, HE PUSHES IT TO THE LAST DAY TRYING TO GET PLAYERS THAT WOULD NEVER COME TO US CAUSE WHY WOULD THEY AS THEY ARE AT REAL MADRID, OR PSG. GIANT CLUBS WITH AMBITION AND THEN SAY IT JUST NEVER HAPPENED.
IT WAS DIFF WITH OZIL, REAL MADE IT PUBLIC THEY WANTED BALE SO OZIL WAS AVAILABLE.
I HEARD NOTHING OF REAL LOOKING FOR A STRIKER, OR PSG
WENGER YOU ARE ARROGANT AND YOUR TIME IS UP.

YOU HAVE A FIRST TEAM AND THEN CRAP COVER, NO GAME B PLAN.

    HAD ENOUGH

This goes to show that the usefulness of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal is over.He does not have any vision for the team any more. How on earth does he think he can win the league when he dismally failed last year with the same players?Arsenal desperately needs a new Manager with a better vision.

“WENGER OUT!”. this is NOT the man who led Arsenal over 10 years ago. there is a serious problem with this ” wenger software” and it is really affecting the system not to function proper. the solution is very simple:
1- UNINSTALL THE SOFTWARE (WENGER) BECAUSE IT IS NO LONGER GOOD FOR THE NEW SYSTEM (ARSENAL @ EMIRATES)
2 – IF THE SYSTEM IS STILL NOT FUNCTIONING WELL, SCAN IT TO ELIMINATE VIRUS (AVERAGE PLAYERS). U CAN ALSO FORMAT THE SYSTEM. BUT REMEMBER TO KEEP IMPORTANT FILES (GOOD PLAYERS) ON YOUR EXTERNAL DRIVE.
3 – INCREASE YOUR RAM (TOP CLASS PLAYERS) AND YOUR HDD (STRONG BENCH)
4 – RESTART THE SYSTEM AND IT WILL WORK.

PLEASE JOIN ME FOR ” WENGER OUTTTTTTT!!!

These comments are interesting to me because they suggest (1) Morgan knows what happens behind closed doors on transfers and / or (2) he has no sense of when a buyer has negotiating power.

Arsenal’s best asset is its financial stability. This is the currency it trades on but of necessity it must trade on it when the sellers are weak, at the end of the transfer window because the over-indebted clubs, Barca, Madrid, PSG, etc. are under pressure to balance the books for the year. This is especially true if they buy new players. But this year they hardly did!!! Do you not wonder why? And if they don’t buy, they are unlikely to sell. Logical, right?

It makes no sense for Arsene to bid for Higuain in early September as Chelsea will outbid them. If they do this, they will never sign an Ozil or Sanchez. The only reason Cech was different was because he did not want to leave London.

An interesting factor in all this is that it is distinctly possible that Benzema and Cavani were not available or were over-priced. Wouldn’t you expect that in a market so short of quality strikers? So who should Wenger have signed instead? Martial? For GBP50m? Surely not.

As for back-up for Coquelin, that is the part that bothers me the most. But again, who would you buy as backup? Schneiderlin, maybe, but apart from that?

I get the “we have money” thing, but even that has no context. Arsenal cannot conceivably have GBP200m available for transfers. Much of that covers debt repayments, this has been the case since the Emirates was built. Why are we forgetting that?

Sure, we can buy anyone but Messi or Ronaldo but who out there is worth the GBP50m numbers mentioned? For Arsenal to spend that kind of money and the wages that come with that, they are actually spending future revenue, not the 200m that financial illiterates like Morgan spew out.

I’m just asking for more logical reasoning before we engage in more Wenger bashing. I’m not saying he was right, I’m just saying I have NEVER seen any commentator, supporter, analyst exploring this topic logically and with facts.

Wenger is a novice when it comes to tactics.
As said he can have all the possession in the of no use, bworld but unless it translates into goals its useless.
No plan B with incessant passing all day all night. No wonder he can’t win when a counter attack leaves the bg exposed.

The striker is still a top priority at Arsenal, but he did not get the right person whom he was after, that is the main reason why Arsenal did not buy. I know most of us supporters we want quality players to be at Arsenal, but what happened was not under Wenger’s control. Probably he will find the right player in January 2016. As it stands, Arsenal is in good shape to challenge for the title, even without a new striker. Wenger have a very good foundation for Under 20 and 21. They have more than a team of players who have been send on loan to gain experience because, he knew at Arsenal they will not have game time from time to time, and he decided to loan all the quality young talented players. He did that with Coquelin and Welshare, Lets not JUDGE Wenger before the middle of the season, a lot of us will be surprised, on how Wenger is going to work with his players in his DISPOSAL at the moment. If you do a proper RESEARCH, you will not blame Wenger so much, I had SOUND IN MIND to ask myself and after making my own research, I did not blame Wenger for a reason. We start with defensive Midfield, Arsenal have loaned two players at Hull City, on those two players, the one who is playing defensive midfield at Hull City, is the kind of a player who can compete with Coquelin as I am writing this mail, the young boy is very playing at Hull City, very talented and he has a very good ball control, accurate passes, he knows when to pass the ball, even long passes and short passes, he can shoot at goal from far better than Coquelin, on headers, he is very good, the young boy has everything that is needed for a player, and I have a feeling Wenger will call him back before the end of the season. I am not talking of Akpom, because a lot of Arsenal supporters know Akpom. Every Arsenal Under 20 and 21 who have been loaned to wherever they are playing, supporters are talking about these young boys, how talented are they. Wellington is at Blackburn and on his first game, supporters were screaming about his talent, some were even suggesting that Blackburn must buy him permanently, we have Zalelema who is now playing for Celtic Rangers in Scotland, already they are screaming about his talent and we have Dane Crowley at Barnsley, already supporters are talking much about his talent and they are playing on every game and they are other talent at the team who are training with the senior team such as Bealik from Poland, he is full of talent and there is a possibility that he will take over from Coquelin in case of injury. Wenger is not a fool, a lot of people will be shocked before the end of the season. Lets give him chance to do his work with the players, before we start to interrupt him. He loaned all these young players, because he want them to play week in week out, incase he will call back some of them during the middle of the season.

I have advised times without number dat Arsene and the current management will never do anything better for the club unless we the fans pushes them to the tight corner where the only what out is to do what the fans need and nothing less. Please family, the only way out is to sit behind out television set and watch them play in empty stadium for only twice and let see the result. They will advise themselves

How can a club like Arsenal go on for eleven years without winning a league and champion league title and keep the same manager. This is absurd.I for one hate it when Mourinho speaks against Arsenal but in his recent statement I totally agree with him that Wenger is a specialist in failure. Even players like Henry, keown,Parlour,Merson,Viera, and Adams understand that we need two to three world class players to make a real challenge. Still he ignores their cries. In my opinion this is also disrespectful for the thousands of loyal fans who week in and week out pay some of the expensive tickets to see their club play.Surely there is someone at the club that must put a stop to this. A good management must see that when things are not going well that is the time for a change in mentality. And that time is NOW
