Arsenal Keen On Signing £38m England International – Report
According to the Mirror, Arsenal have joined Chelsea and Manchester United in the race to sign Everton defender John Stones but we may need to pay £38m to land him.
Stones has developed into one of the best young defensive talents in British football over the past two years since joining Everton from Barnsley.
His potential has not only seen him break into the senior England squad, but he’s also attracting plenty of interest from the upper echelons of the Premier League.
Chelsea saw their opening £20m bid rejected earlier this month [via Sky Sports] and Jose Mourinho angered Everton manager Roberto Martinez after going public with his desire to sign Stones last week.
The Mirror claim that United have now registered their interest in the 21-year-old but surprisingly, the newspaper also suggests that Arsenal are keen on luring the centre-back away from Goodison Park too.
We’ve been linked with quite a few central defenders in recent weeks and they’ve mainly been younger players aged around 20-22, so it looks like Arsene Wenger is on the look-out for a long-term replacement for Per Mertesacker.
Stones would be an excellent signing but as well as having to fight Chelsea and United for his signature, the Mirror suggest Everton are demanding around £38m, so I think this is a deal that’s highly unlikely to come off for us.
Wenger is never going to pay that kind of money and he won’t want to get into a bidding war situation with the likes of United/Chelsea, so I think we’ll see our interest end fairly soon and we’ll move on to cheaper targets.
