Arsenal ‘Likely’ To Sign €28m-Rated Portuguese Star – Reports
The Daily Star claim that Arsenal are ‘likely’ to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho this summer after Arsene Wenger turned his attention to the Portuguese star.
Arsene has been tipped to bring in a new central midfielder this summer and a whole host of names have been linked with a move in recent weeks.
Morgan Schneiderlin and Arturo Vidal emerged as the two most likely targets but it appears neither player will move to the Emirates this summer.
As we reported earlier, the Telegraph claim that Arsene has now ended his interest in Vidal while Schneiderlin is poised to move to Manchester United, so the boss has been looking at alternative names.
The Daily Star suggest that we’ve now turned our attention back to long-term target William Carvalho and are ‘likely’ to complete a deal for the €28m-rated midfielder this summer.
However, the newspaper doesn’t give any real indication why they believe we are ‘likely’ to secure Carvalho’s signature, so we should take their report with a large grain of salt for now.
I suppose it was predictable we’d be linked with Carvalho again, especially as he’s been impressing at the Under-21 World Cup where his dominant displays have led Portugal in to tonight’s final where they’ll take on Sweden.
A new holding midfielder is important this summer as we need competition for Coquelin in that role and my preferred choice would still be Schneiderlin, but it appears the boss has gone cold on the Southampton man so Carvalho would be an excellent alternative.
The big draw-back compared to Schneiderlin is he hasn’t played in the Premier League yet but he’s a huge talent and at just 23, he’s got plenty of time to develop further and has all the attributes to be a world class player.
If the Daily Star’s prediction is right and we do sign Carvalho this summer, I’d be delighted, but I’m not getting too excited just yet though….
