Arsenal ‘Favourites’ To Sign €47m-Rated Hitman – Reports
Arsenal are once again being linked with a move for Gonzalo Higuain with reports suggesting we are ‘favourites’ to sign the Argentinean international this summer.
Higuain came close to moving to the Emirates back in 2013 but we stalled on the deal after launching a failed bid to sign Luis Suarez and he eventually signed for Napoli.
The 27-year-old has been a relative success in Italy, scoring 46 goals in 87 appearances in all competitions so far, but there are rumours that he’s eyeing a move at the end of the season.
Napoli currently sit sixth in the Serie A table after losing to Roma over the weekend and with third-placed Lazio now eight points clear and only three Champions League places up for grabs, Rafa Benitez’s side look destined to miss out.
Some reports suggest it’s almost certain that Higuain will leave this summer and has already told close friends that he doesn’t want to be playing in the Europa League again next season.
This has led to rumours of a possible move to Arsenal and the Telegraph claim that we’re considered as ‘favourites’ to sign the former Real Madrid man.
Napoli would no doubt be keen to keep hold of their star striker so it’s believed they would demand close to €47m (£34.5m) in order to sell.
It’s going to be interesting to see what Arsene Wenger’s plans are for the front-line this summer. With Giroud in red-hot form and Welbeck and Sanchez also capable of playing through the middle, there is an argument that we don’t need another striker.
I personally think we could do with another option, but would understand if the boss decided to stick with what he’s got. Let’s be honest, scoring goals hasn’t been our problem. It’s at the back and in central midfield where we fell short during the first half of the campaign.
If we do go for a front-man, then Higuain would be a decent option but I wouldn’t like to see us pay the €47m quoted. He’ll be 28 later this year so I’d be surprised if Arsene agreed to pay that much for a player who’s value will drop substantially in a couple of years time.
Someone like Dybala is cheaper and much younger, and despite not having the pedigree of Higuain, I could see us going for something like him if Napoli do demand close to €50m.
