Arsenal Plot €27m Bid For La Liga Defender – Reports
According to reports, Arsenal are lining-up a €27m bid for out-of-favour left-back Fabio Coentrao as Real Madrid get ready to offload the Portuguese defender this summer.
Coentrao joined Madrid from Benfica in 2011 but has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabaur over the past 18 months with Carlo Ancelotti preferring Marcelo at left-back.
The Portuguese international has supposedly been told he’s free to find a new club and there were reports suggesting that Madrid tried to offload him on deadline day earlier this month.
A move failed to materialise so the European champions will now look to sell this summer and it appears we could now be ready to offer the 26-year-old a fresh start as the Express claim Arsene Wenger wants to bring him to the Emirates at the end of the season and is plotting a €27m (£20m) bid.
Considering we already have two good options at left back in Monreal and Gibbs, if this report is accurate then it suggests that either Arsene sees Monreal’s future as a back-up centre-half or the Spaniard may be heading out the club this summer.
The 28-year-old has been in excellent form lately and has been keeping Gibbs out the team, but that hasn’t stopped speculation suggesting he wants to return to Spain with the likes of Athletic Bilbao understood to be interested.
If Nacho does want to leave then no doubt Arsene is already lining-up replacements and Coentrao would be a sensible option. He has plenty of experience at the very top level and although he’s never been a regular, he’s still played in a superb Madrid side that won the Champions League last season, and you can never have too many winners in the squad.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the course of the next few months but I personally wouldn’t be surprised if Monreal does head back to Spain this summer, which would open the door for Coentrao to come to North London.
