Wenger Wants £20m Midfielder To Be ‘Final Piece’ In New-Look Squad
According to the Telegraph, Arsene Wewnger wants Morgan Schneiderlin to be the ‘final piece’ in his new-look squad but he’s prepared to wait until the summer to get his man.
The boss has been busy this month snapping up youngster Krystian Bielik from Legia Warsaw while Gabriel Paulista is set to join from Villarreal to offer us some much-needed depth in defence.
But there is still one area of the squad that needs addressing and the Telegraph claim that Arsene wants to sign a world class defensive midfielder and he’s made Morgan Schneiderlin his No.1 target.
The emergence of Francis Coquelin means the boss is in no rush to get a deal done this month, but with Le Coq’s contract expiring in the summer and no extension agreed as yet, we may need a long term solution and Schneiderlin is the man we want.
The French international has been superb for Southampton over the past two years and it’s believed we’ll make a big play for his signature at the end of the season, but the newspaper suggests it would take at least £20m to persuade the Saints to sell.
If we were able to do a deal, then the Telegraph claims he would be the final piece in Arsene’s rebuilding project and we would finally have a squad capable of putting together a sustained title push next season.
A month ago I’d have begged the club to sign Schneiderlin but Coquelin’s recent form has certainly lessened our need to sign a defensive midfielder. If he continues that form throughout the second half of the campaign then I would question whether we need to spend £20m on Schneiderlin at all.
So for me, it makes sense to delay making our play for the Southampton ace and see how Coquelin develops over the coming months. If he cements himself as a first team regular and agrees a new deal, perfect. If things don’t work out, then we should go all-out for Schneiderlin.
