Wenger Looks To Solve Midfield Problems With Swoop For German Ace
According to reports, Arsenal are showing a keen interest in signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan but will face stiff competition for his signature.
Gundogan has only recently returned to full fitness after missing several months with a troublesome back injury but it seems his future at the Wesfalonstadion is under serious doubt.
The 24-year-old’s current contract expires in 2016 and the Express claims that the German international has made it clear he won’t be signing an extension.
Dortmund have endured a terrible first half to the season that’s left them sitting in the bottom three of the Bundesliga table, and it looks as though Gundogan is ready for a new challenge.
The newspaper suggests that Arsenal are keen on giving him that opportunity in England but will face competition from the likes of Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Dortmund don’t want to lose him but are ready to listen to offers as they want to avoid another situation similar to that of Robert Lewandowski, which saw the player walk away for nothing when his contract expired.
Gundogan has previously confirmed that he’d be interested in trying his luck in either Spain or the Premier League:
“Playing outside Germany is one of my big goals.
“If one day I leave here, I’d like to play in Spain or for one of the big teams in England.”
An athletic holding midfielder should be a priority for Arsene Wenger this month and I think we should do everything we can to land Gundogan if he really is available.
As long as he’s over his back trouble, he would be an excellent signing and would be the ideal long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta in the middle of the park.
The Express don’t cite what kind of fee Dortmund would demand but I expect it would be at least £20m, especially with the number of clubs who are interested, but we have the funds so let’s hope Arsene is prepared to push the boat out to try and land him.
