Arsenal ‘Open Formal Talks’ To Sign International Defender

By on October 29, 2014

Reports in Italy claim that Arsenal have opened formal talks with the agent of Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner over a possible move this January.

Lichtsteiner is out of contract at the end of the season so will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club like Arsenal as of January ahead of a free transfer switch next July.

However, it seems Arsenal aren’t willing to wait that long as Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claims we have opened talks with the full-back’s agent about a potential switch that would see him make the move to the Emirates this winter.

Juventus are understood to be desperate to tie him down to fresh terms but as of this moment they have been unable to come to an agreement so they may be willing to cash-in instead of losing him for nothing in the summer.

Lichtsteiner is certainly a talented player and the Polish international would add plenty of depth to the right-back department if we did sign him but the big question is; do we actually need him?

Calum Chambers has been filling in for Mathieu Debuchy at right-back while he’s been injured but the Frenchman is expected back in December, while we’ve also got highly-rated youngster Hector Bellerin breaking into the first team set-up, so I’m not sure there is an urgent need to sign another right-sided defender.

Surely our resources would be better utilised signing a centre-back? We are desperately short of options in the middle with Nacho Monreal being forced to fill-in as a make-shift central defender with Laurent Koscielny out, so I’d suggest Arsene should be concentrating his efforts on bringing in reinforcements in the middle rather than another right-back.
