Wenger To Be Cautious With Star As He Fears Lengthy Injury Layoff

By on September 4, 2014

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is going to play it cautious with Laurent Koscielny over the next few months after failing to sign another centre-back before the transfer window closed, according to the Telegraph.

Many fans were left seething that Arsenal didn’t sign another central defender before the window slammed shut on Monday night as we missed out on a number of targets including Matija Nastasic, Kostas Manolas and Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

It’s left us with just three senior centre-backs to choose from and any injury to Per Mertesacker or Laurent Koscielny would put an enormous amount of pressure on Calum Chambers.

The 19-year-old has already featured far more than expected following his £16m move from Southampton due to Koscielny’s troublesome Achilles injury, and our lack of options at the back were exposed again when the Frenchman was forced off against Leicester with a head injury.

Koscielny has been forced to withdraw from the France squad to play Spain and Serbia during the international break and the Telegraph claim that Arsene plans to be cautious with pushing the 28-year-old too hard over the next four months in fear of causing a serious problem with his Achilles.

It means Kos isn’t likely to feature in the Capital One Cup at all and will be monitored before every Premier League and Champions League game, and Arsene isn’t afraid to withdraw him from any fixture if he feels any sort of discomfort – as proven away at Everton.

Our situation at the back is certainly worrying, particularly with Koscienly’s Achilles playing up, and I really hope our inability to sign a centre-back isn’t going to cost us. We just about got away with it last season, so lets hope we can make it to January and the boss can finally bring in another option.
