Arsenal In ‘Deep Talks’ To Sign €35m Midfielder – Reports
According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Arsenal are in deep negotiations with Sporting Lisbon over the signing of midfielder William Carvalho.
We’ve been linked with the 22-year-old in recent weeks as Arsene Wenger looks to bring in a defensive midfielder before the window closes on the 1st September, but it now appears we’ve stepped up our interest.
O Jogo claim that Arsenal chiefs are in ‘deep talks’ with Sporting and the Portuguese clubs president Bruno de Carvalho has made it clear that he’s willing to accept a fee in the region of €35m – which is well below the players €45m buy-out clause.
It’s understood we had our opening €30m bid rejected as we wanted to pay in installments, but Sporting could be willing to do business at around €30m-€35m if we agree to pay a large proportion of the fee up front.
The problem is that an investment company own 40% of Carvalho’s economic rights so Sporting want as much money up front as they can get to help ease their financial problems.
O Jogo also report that Sporting have asked about the possibility of taking at least one player on loan as part of the deal, with Yaya Sanogo, Francis Coquelin, Serge Gnabry and Ryo Miyaichi all named as possibilities.
There’s virtually no chance we’ll let Sanogo leave on loan unless Arsene has plans to bring in another striker, but any of the other three could certainly leave on loan. Coquelin would be the obvious choice as he would be a replacement for Carvalho and has no future at Arsenal.
We’re now into the final week of the window and I hope we’re going to see Arsene make some late moves. But I don’t think we’ll commit to a big-money deal like Carvalho until after our Champions League qualification is assured, so it looks like we’ll be in for an exciting few days of the window if we can beat Besiktas on Wednesday.
