Arsenal Were ‘Set To Sign’ €35m Superstar – Reports
An interesting report doing the rounds today with the Metro citing reports from Spain that claim Arsenal were set to sign Borussia Dortmund superstar Marco Reus this summer before injury scuppered our plans.
The 25-year-old attacker has been in the news over the past 24 hours with the papers claiming he could be on the move after supposedly rejecting a contract extension offer from Dortmund.
The Germans are desperate to tie him down to fresh terms that would see his €35m buy-out clause removed from his contract, but Reus is reluctant to lose that get-out and has snubbed their advances.
As one of the most exciting attackers in the world, Reus has attracted interest from all the major European teams but the Metro are reporting today that Arsenal were set to pull off a sensational €35m (£27.6m) deal before the World Cup.
However, the potential deal was aborted when Reus tore ankle ligaments in June and was subsequently ruled out for several months.
It’s difficult to know how much truth there is in this report, but Arsene Wenger is certainly a huge fan, so there could be something in it. Although it was my understanding that the players buy-out clause only came in to affect in the summer of 2015, so I don’t see how we could have been signing him for that price this summer.
Obviously Reus would have been a dream signing for us and it would have been interesting to see if this supposed move would have gone through had the player not got injured last month.
However, as disappointing as it is to have ‘missed out’ on the German international we went on to sign Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona and I have a feeling this move wouldn’t have gone through had we signed Reus, so we’ve certainly bagged an excellent alternative.
