Arsenal ‘Agree £23m Deal’, Player To Sign £8m-Per-Year Contract
Arsenal appear to be closing in on the signing of Sami Khedira with Spanish newspaper Sport claiming that the midfielder WILL join us for £23m after agreeing terms over a four-year deal worth around £8m-per-season.
Speculation has been growing over the past week suggesting that we were in advanced talks with Real Madrid over the German international as Arsene Wenger looks to bring in a long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta.
A deal was understood to be getting close towards the end of last week but some newspapers suggested that Khedira’s wage demands of £150,000-a-week were proving to be a major stumbling block.
However, Sport are now reporting that the 27-year-old is close to tying up a move to the Emirates after supposedly agreeing terms over a four-year deal worth £8m-per-season – which works out at just over £150,000-a-week – after we agreed a £23m fee with Madrid.
Khedira has just entered the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu and the paper suggests that the player has rejected Madrid’s final extension offer and is keen on moving to north London to link-up with close friend Mesut Ozil.
If that’s the case then it’s likely Madrid will cash-in rather than risk losing him for nothing, and they’ve already signed a potential replacement in compatriot Toni Kroos, so on that front I could see us being able to get a deal done with Madrid.
However, I’m not totally convinced by Sport’s report. For one thing they are a Barcelona-based newspaper who have very few ties with Madrid. They have got some things correct int he past, but mainly when reporting on Barca news, not Madrid.
There’s also the fact that Sport claim we’ve agreed to pay Khedira over £150,000-a-week, which I find extremely difficult to believe as that would make him our highest earner at the club, even above Ozil and new signing Alexis Sanchez.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love us to sign Khedira as he’d be an amazing addition and the deal could still happen, but I just don’t believe it’s as close as Sport are claiming and certainly don’t feel we’ll pay him as much as £8m-per-season if he does end up coming here.
