Report: Arsene Wenger Eyes FIVE New Signings – Here Are His Targets

By on June 25, 2014

It looks like it’s going to be a busy few months at the Emirates with reports today claiming Arsene Wenger is going to bring in five new players this summer.

As everybody knows by now, one of the bosses main priorities is to bring in a top class striker to offer competition to Olivier Giroud next season and despite Arsene trying to play down reports, Mario Balotelli has emerged as a key target.

The Italian striker has been strongly linked in recent days and with AC Milan believed to be keen on cashing in, a potential £25m deal is being touted by the press, while the likes of Karim Benzema, Jackson Martinez, Wilfried Bony and Loic Remy have also been linked.

The Daily Star suggest a new striker will be just the start of a busy summer that will see Arsene target another four players. Also on the agenda is another attacker and most likely one that can play out wide as well as through the middle. A whole host of names have been linked but the latest and most exciting is that of Alexis Sanchez.

Speculation has intensified that we’ve made a formal enquiry for the Barcelona attacker with some papers even claiming we’ve put forward an offer to the 25-year-old. The Chilean international would be a sensational signing and is rumoured to be on the marker for just £25m – which would be a bargain.

Obviously a replacement for Bacary Sagna is also needed and the most likely candidate right now seems to be Ivory Coast international Serge Aurier. He looks to be fantastic going forward but I still have my doubts over his defensive capabilities.

We’ll see what happens but with Toulouse ready to sell for around £8m, he certainly seems like a ‘Wenger-type’ of signing. Seamus Coleman and Calum Chambers from Southampton are other potential targets.

Next up will be a replacement for Lukasz Fabianski after he left to join Swansea on a free transfer. A key target hasn’t really emerged as yet but the likes of Pepe Reina, David Marshall and John Ruddy have all been suggested as targets with prices ranging from £6m – £10m.

The final area that the boss is looking to strengthen is the centre of the park with a defensive midfielder on the agenda, and Morgan Schneiderlin, Sven and Lars Bender, and Sami Khedira have all been linked in recent weeks.

Any of the quartet would be excellent additions but for me, Schneiderlin could make the most sense as he has plenty of Premier League experience and would probably be the cheapest of the lot.

Wenger was believed to have around £100m to spend before bringing in another £14m from the Fabregas to Chelsea and Vela to Sociedad deals,  so he easily has enough to fill these five positions and build a squad capable of winning the league next season. For me, the ideal summer would be:

  • Benzema (£40m)
  • Sanchez £25m
  • Coleman (£25m)
  • Ruddy (£6m)
  • Schneiderlin (£15m)
  • Total = £111m

With those additions we win the league and make a real push for the Champions League. However, in reality we’re unlikely to get Benzema or Coleman, so Balotelli and Aurier will have to do.

It’s also worth noting that if Thomas Vermaelen leaves, we’ll need to bring in replacement for him too and I’d argue we already need to sign a fourth-choice centre-back, so we could end up having to buy seven players this summer.

Sadly, you’ve not budgeted for wages so they’ve all decided to go elsewhere.

Back up goal keeper; Ruddy has premiership experience and would be content with being second choice playing cup matches.

Right back; Serge Aurier…would add an extra dimension offensively that sagna never offered and physical frame suited for premiership, weneger may have second thoughts with african nation duties.

Striker; Mario Balotelli…most realistic striker he could possibly get to make a statement, big risk but its worth taking…very young so re sale value is still there worst case scenario…this team does need more characters like him and hopefully with age his mentality on and off the field improves.

Versatile attacker who can play on wings and upfront; Draxler would probably be wenger first choice but the fee is definitely the stumbling block, ALexis sanchez, Greizmen, lavezzi, loic remy are possible options.

Defensive Midfielder; very important area wenger must address, I would be happy with Southampton’s scherderlin (probably spelt his name wrong)…he would offer premiership experience and the style of play at southampton suggest he would fit in with our technical game whilst proving the steel. Was said to have the best stats in his position last season…signing him and diaby finally stepping up to the plate would be massive for arsenal football club.

It’s all a waste of time trying to second-guess Mr. Wenger. Nobody has ever succeeded in doing that. We just wait for what he does and hope it’s best for the team.

5 is all well and good if we intend to hold onto the remaining 20. But if for example we are thinking of letting any of cazorla, podolski, vermaelen, monreal, arteta, diaby, martinez, miquel move on they will also need replacing.
