Arsenal ‘To Match Any Barca Bid’ For €40m Striker – Report
Arsenal look set to renew their interest in Gonzalo Higuain with reports claiming that we are ready to match any Barcelona bid for the Napoli hitman.
I’m sure you will all remember us being strongly linked with Higuain last summer and we came close to signing him before turning our attention to Luis Suarez.
As we haggled with Liverpool over the now infamous ‘release clause’, we ended up missing out on Higuain as well after Napoli agreed to pay Real Madrid €40m for the Argentinean striker.
The 26-year-old enjoyed an excellent debut season in Italy, scoring 24 goals in 44 games, leading to reports in Spain on Monday claiming that Barcelona are ready to make a €40m move for the striker with new boss Luis Enrique apparently wanting to pair him with compatriot Leo Messi next season.
Higuain talked up the possibility of moving to the Nou Camp when asked about the reports, saying he’s flattered to be linked with Barcelona:
“Of course. I enjoy playing alongside him for the national team.” Higuain said
“Obviously it would be an enormous pleasure, but for now I’m focused on the World Cup.
“I’m flattered by the interest from Barca. Any player would be.”
However, it appears Arsenal aren’t going to let Higuain slip through their fingers without a fight this time around as the Daily Express are reporting today that Arsene Wenger is ‘desperate’ to sign the striker this summer and will ‘match any bid’ the Catalans make.
Obviously we made a huge mistake in not just going all-out for Higuain last summer and if he’s available this year, we should certainly do everything we can to try and sign him.
But it’s going to be difficult to persuade him to turn down the advances of Barcelona if the La Liga giants do want him, and despite what the Express claim, I don’t see Arsene ‘matching’ any bid they make. That’s simply not his style. He’ll have a valuation in mind and won’t pay a penny above it, which will most likely mean we’ll miss out again.
