Arsenal Handed Boost In Hunt For £20m Hitman

By on June 14, 2014

Arsenal have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Swansea City striker Wilfried Bony with his agent confirming the player wants to join a top-six team.

We’ve been linked with the Ivory Coast international in recent weeks as Arsene Wenger draws up his list of striker targets with the boss expected to bring in at least one new forward this summer.

It’s easy to see why Arsene would have put the 25-year-old down as a potential new recruit, as he’s just enjoyed a sensational debut season with the Swans, scoring 25 goals in all competitions following his £10m move from Vitesse last summer.

Newcastle United have also been strongly tipped to go in for the striker this summer. However, Bony’s agent, Dabibor Lacina, has now confirmed that his client has no interest in joining a club like Newcastle as he wants to join a top six Premier League side.

Lacina also claimed that Bony is available for £20m this summer and if he doesn’t get a move to a top English side, he’ll look to move abroad.

“I spoke to Newcastle about Bony last summer. Newcastle should have bought Bony a year ago but they didn’t believe in him,” he told The Shields Gazette.

“They could have signed him for £10 million, but they said they weren’t sure if he was good enough, that he was only playing in Holland [with Vitesse]. Now he is worth £20m.

“The next step for Bony is a top-six team in England or a top team in Germany, Spain or France, or he will stay with Swansea.

“We have a certain strategy. Bony is in a totally different place to Newcastle and wants to move to a club with ambition. We have had no contact with Newcastle.” source: Daily Star

Although he may not be the marquee name many fans are hoping for, I actually think Bony would be a shrewd move. He has now proven he can cut it in the Premier League, he has bags of pace, is powerful and is good in the air, so he’d certainly be a useful addition.

However, while a fee of around £20m seems fair to me, I’m not sure Arsene would go that high when he has other targets in mind, so unless Swansea lower their asking price, I doubt we’ll see him come to the Emirates.
