Arsenal Set To Table £30m Swap Deal For German Attacker – Report
According to reports today, Arsenal are set to table a stunning £30m player-plus-cash swap deal for Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus.
The German international has become one of the most sought-after players in Europe after two excellent seasons with Dortmund where he’s scored 42 goals in 90 appearances following his move from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012.
Barcelona have been strongly linked with the 25-year-old in recent days and CaughtOffside claim the Catalans interest has forced Arsenal into action with the club ready to test Dortmund’s resolve with £30m in cash PLUS Lukas Podolski.
I’m sure that kind of offer may be tempting for the Bundesliga outfit as they would get a ready-made replacement if they were to sell Reus, but I’m not sure how much I’d read into this report.
CaughtOffside aren’t the most reliable source and they go on to claim that Arsene Wenger wants to turn the attacking midfielder into a striker – which I find extremely difficult to believe.
He may be able to convert into a striker in a 4-4-2 formation where he’d have a big man like Giroud playing alongside him, but in our 4-2-3-1 formation I really don’t see him being able to play the lone role up front in the Premier League.
We need to add a pacey winger to our squad as well as a striker over the coming weeks, so I’d be delighted to see Reus come in to fill that void, but I’d be surprised if Arsene sees him as his main striker signing this summer. I could be wrong, and CaughtOffside may have the inside scoop on this transfer, but I’m going to take their report with a large pinch of salt for now.
Anyway, it’s highly unlikely Dortmund will sell Reus this summer. The clubs sporting director Michael Zorc said yesterday he could “definitely rule out a transfer” this summer amid interest from Barcelona, and the player is known to be a life-long Dortmund fan, so he’s not going to push for a move.
Reus is also currently out injured after being ruled out of the World Cup with an ankle problem, so he won’t be going anywhere any time soon even if a surprise move does happen this summer.
