‘I’ll Sign With Arsenal For The Rest Of My Career’

By on March 20, 2014

Wojciech Szczesny has revealed that he’s willing to commit to Arsenal for the rest of his career.

We were linked with a number of goalkeepers last summer after Szczesny had an inconsistent season in 2012/13, with some questioning whether he was too young to command the No.1 jersey at Arsenal.

The likes of Iker Casillas, Julio Cesar and Victor Valdes were all understood to be of interest to Arsene Wenger but in the end the boss opted to stick with Szczesny and bring in Emiliano Viviano as our third-choice back-up.

The Polish goalkeeper has proved his critics wrong after an impressive season between the sticks, starting in all 29 Premier League games and there have been few more consistent than the 23-year-old.

He was rewarded with a new long-term deal in November but he’s adamant there is no better club for him and he’d be willing to sign a contract tying him to Arsenal for the rest of his career.

“If they give me a contract to the end of my career, I’d sign it without any hesitation,” he said. “I feel attached to the club and the coach who has given me a chance. There are not many who would do that but I must’ve been good. I see the future here.

“I’ll play at Arsenal as long as am wanted here. I am not afraid to fight for number one with anyone: Fabianski or Casillas.

“I hope I won’t make the boss think, ‘Wojciech’s not number one’. It’s all in my hands. I am in the best form of my life.”[source: Standard]

However, Szczesny has revealed that there was a time when things weren’t going so well for him at the Emirates, and claims that he wanted to leave back in 2010 when he was struggling to make the breakthrough. He continued.

“In 2010, I wanted to leave. I was far from the first team and my contract was expiring. That was the only time I was ready to leave. I was ready to play in the first team but I wasn’t even a sub in League Cup.”

Thankfully he was persuaded to stay and the rest is history. He still has his moments of madness sometimes, but those will go the more experience he gets and I really do think we’ve got the goalkeeper position sorted for the foreseeable future.
