Wenger Confirms He Might Not Sign Anyone Before Tottenham Game

By on August 24, 2013

Arsene Wenger has confirmed no new signings will come in before the Champions League second leg against Fenerbache on Tuesday while it’s also possible no new faces will be in the door in time to face Tottenham next Sunday.

It’s been a hugely frustrating summer with the club missing out on several top names and despite the boss having around £70m to spend, all we’ve got to show for it is the free signing of unknown French youngster Yaya Sanogo.

Wenger confirmed last week after the Fenerbache game that he’ll definitely be ‘active in the market’ during the last 10 days, but it seems he’s ready to leave it REALLY late as he’s claimed today that no new players will be signed in time to face the Turks on Tuesday, while there’s a chance nobody will be in before Spurs come to the Emirates on Sunday – just one day before deadline day.

Thankfully, Wenger also confirmed that the impressive 3-1 win over Fulham today hasn’t affected his transfer plans and he still knows exactly what he wants to add, but has denied that an improved bid for Yohan Cabaye has been submitted.

Wenger told Arsenal.com:

on if results alter his transfer plans…

No. We will be a bit less under media pressure maybe but that will not change exactly. I know exactly what I want to do and that will not change.

on if Cabaye being left out of the Newcastle squad has anything to do with Arsenal…

No.

on if he’s made another bid for Cabaye…

No.

on if he’ll strengthen before the Fenerbahce game…

Before the Fenerbahce game? No.

on if he’ll strengthen before the weekend…

Before next weekend? It’s possible. Honestly, I’m not the only one that can decide that because the clubs who sell the players [are involved too]. We are on the market, you know that. I know we expect news from us. We will try to give you some but at the moment, nothing to announce.

Not bringing anyone in for Fenerbache is fine, we are well in control of the tie and should easily have enough resources to finish the job off. However, I’ll be hugely disappointed if no new faces are signed before the Spurs game. We simply can not go into a game of that magnitude with the squad as light as it is right now.

From the squad available today, only Koscielny will added for the Spurs game. Possibly Miyaichi as well, but he’s hardly a player we can rely upon just yet. Our bench today had Frimpong, Zelalem and Gnarby on it, as well as Sanogo. If we pick up any more injuries before next weekend, we could be in trouble.

It’s simply not a risk worth taking. If Arsene has his targets, why not just try and get them in as soon as possible?
