Arsenal Set Announce Second Signing Of The Summer, Unfortunately For Us It’s Mathieu Flamini
Arsenal are set to announce their second signing of the summer with the free acquisition of former midfielder Mathieu Flamini, according to reports tonight.
The Frenchman made an acrimonious exit from the Emirates back in 2008 after turning down a contract extension in favour of making a free transfer move to AC Milan. His time in Italy didn’t go according to plan though and he was largely used as a utility player during his time at the San Siro.
His contract expired this summer and with Milan only offering him a 12-month deal, Flamini decided to find another club and has been training back at Arsenal these past two weeks.
Many Gooners joked that he would be our new ‘top, top, top quality’ midfielder and it seems those jokes are about to come to fruition with the Daily Mail claiming we’re close to agreeing a deal to re-sign him.
There’s no doubt our need for midfield reinforcements is clear, especially since Mikel Arteta and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain picked up injuries, but I’ll be pretty pissed off if Flamini is our only midfield signing this summer.
Amid all the talk of big-money bids for Bender, Gustavo and Cabaye, to end up with Flamini on a free would be a gutting. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem in him returning as a utility player. He’ll be a useful addition as he can play in a variety of positions, but don’t tell me there is nobody out there better than Flamini that we could buy?!
The 29-year-old could come straight into the squad if he’s registered by 12pm on Friday, but hopefully his signature will be followed by some ‘proper’ signings.
How do you feel about Flamini’s return?
