Marca: Higuain Still Wants Arsenal Move And Expects Agreement To Be Reached

By on July 23, 2013

According to Spanish publication Marca, Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain has his heart set on joining Arsenal and expects us to agree a fee for his services ‘in the coming days’.

All the talk over the last 24 hours has suggested the Argentinean striker was on his way to Napoli with reports claiming the Serie A outfit had agreed a fee with Madrid.

However, Marca – who are known to have close ties with Real Madrid and are often used as an unofficial ‘mouthpiece’ by the club  – are reporting today that although Napoli have indicated they may be willing to pay a fee in the region of £32m, NO deal is in place as yet and Higuain’s future is still very-much up in the air.

The newspaper claims the 25-year-old is still determined to leave the Bernabeu this summer and has his heart set on a move to the Emirates. Interestingly, Marca also suggest that Higuain expects us to go back in with an improved offer within the next few days and is confident the two clubs will eventually agree a deal.

There are no quotes to back up Marca’s claims and they rarely print anything that goes against Madrid’s ‘agenda’, so it’s difficult to know what to make of the story. It could be seen as a way to instigate movement from Arsenal’s side, or conversely it could be regarded as a way to push Napoli into upping their bid.

Either way, I hope we do go back in and manage to get a deal done for Higuain and I really don’t see out move for Suarez coming to anything, and I fear if Higuain ends up going to Napoli it will simply fund Madrid’s move to Suarez.

So let’s ensure we sign a world class striker this summer by snapping up Higuain asap.

What do you make of Marca’s story? Would you go all-out to sign Higuain, or risk everything by continuing to concentrate on Suarez?

I don’t think madrid actually want a striker. Their plan is to have a front 3 of ronaldo benzema bale. Its not about keeping higuain or where he goes it is simply about getting the most cash possible to achieve that line up.

Whereas I am unsure exactly what wenger wants. Walcott seems set on the right but after that I am unsure if he wants a striker to replace giroud or play behind him? I’m not sure if that role is going to jack santi or rosicky? I am not sure if he sees santi as the left forward or poldi or is he looking at bernard? All I am fairly certain of is that unless he signs more holding players then he must be thinking of arteta and ramsey as our first choice. As it stands I see 9 players competing for 6 positions (arteta ramsey wilshire chamberlain rosicky cazorla walcott podolski giroud) obviously if fit diaby would make that 10. That would be the midfield and attack including 4 subs. In addition to those 10 we have frimpong yennaris aneke eisfeld olsson gnabry ryo campbell sanogo afobe. That is basically a back up 10 so 20 players for 6 positions. I haven’t even included the likes of toral jeffrey ansah akpom wellington galindo jebb lipman who are also all professionals and challenging for those positions albeit at under 21 level. Plus the deadwood 4 who are assumingly on their way out park chamakh bendtner gervinho

The big difference for me is the lack of players challenging for a place in the back 4. Sagna jenkinson mertesacker koscielny vermaelen miquel monreal gibbs are the 8 most senior defenders then you have boateng fagan bellerin siemann hayden ormonde-ottewill as the only other professional defenders. So unless I am mistaken 14 players for 4 positions as opposed to 32 for 6. I also haven’t included zelalem as he is only a scholar so really 33 players for 6 positions.

Basically our squad is so lopsided it is scary. Wenger needs to address this 40% of our outfield players should be defenders and 60% midfield/attack. Ideally we need around 20 defenders for every 30 midfield/attack. So I would say we are around 6 defenders short and have around 3 strikers/midfielders too many. So replace gervinho with a striker bit replace bendtner park and chamakh with defenders.

Sorry mate, but do you honestly feel that any of those back up players are of sufficient quality to fall in place should Arsenal have one of their ridiculous injury / suspension times?

Agree that more defenders are required, but taking out the 10 you have mentioned and also 8 players that are worthwhile at the back (Sagna / Jenkinson / Gibbs / Monreal / Koscienly / Mertesacker / Vermaelen / Chesney) we are talking about 7 players that are needed to bolster the squad across all positions – otherwise we are simply standing still.

I don’t know whether it is sensible to pay 30+ million for a bench warming striker. He is behind Benzema who is not prolific. I think Arsenal was right not to go above 20 million for a striker with potential. Much as I dislike Saurez, I think he will be worth the money; at the end its about football not personality.
