[Player Ratings] Chelsea 3-2 Arsenal: Ozil & Xhaka woeful again for sorry Gunners
Arsenal’s first half fightback was in vein as we left empty handed with Chelsea running out 3-2 victors at Stamford Bridge this evening.
Shocking defending all-round led to Chelsea racing in to a 2-0 lead while poor finishing from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan certainly didn’t help our cause.
Mkhitaryan made amends with a fine finish to make it 2-1 before he teed-up Alex Iwobi to score the equaliser just before half-time. However, we lacked any spark in the second half and Chelsea won in with ten minutes to go as Alexandre Lacazette’s sloppy ball led to Marcos Alonso scoring the winner.
Here are my ratings:
Cech 6/10 | Went down a little too easily for the Morata goal and nutmegged for their winner but made a superb save to deny Barkley in the second half.
Bellerin 6/10 | Shocking defensively but a huge outlet down the right going forward. Emery really need to work on his defensive skills as he’s a liability at times.
Sokratis 5/10 | All over the place in the first half and had no understanding with Mustafi at all. Worrying signs already with this so-called partnership.
Mustafi 5/10 | Absolutely useless for both their goals, especially the second when he was twisted inside-out by Morata. Never going to be good enough.
Monreal 6/10 | A steady display, as you’d expect from Monreal, but will be disappointed the winner came from his side.
Xhaka 5/10 | Wayward passing and absolutely no desire to track runners or protect the defence. Subbed at half-time. Should be dropped next week.
Guendouzi 7/10 | Another encouraging performance. Always wanted the ball, worked hard for the team and got stuck in. Going to be a top talent just needs to work on his positioning sometimes.
Mkhitaryan 7/10 | Took his goal very well and grabbed an assist for Iwobi’s goal but defensively he was poor as he offered no support to Bellerin.
Ozil 5/10 | Another disappointing performance. Was virtually anonymous and offered little threat. Rightly hooked midway through the second half. Hopefully a no-nonsense manager like Emery will give him a kick up the arse because he needs it.
Iwobi 7/10 | Nice finish to level things up just before half time and was positive in possession. Worked hard to cover Monreal as well.
Aubameyang 5/10 | Shocking first half as he missed two great chances and offered very little threat after the break. Not his day at all.
Subs:
Torreira 6/10 | No idea why he didn’t start. On at half-time and added protection in front of the defence. Although he could have done more to track Alonso for their winner.
Ramsey 5/10 | Almost grabbed an equaliser in the dying minutes. Surprised to see him dropped.
Lacazette 5/10 | At fault for their winner as he gave away possession with a sloppy pass and then failed to track back to make up for his mistake.

Overall, it was much of the same that we’ve seen in recent years. Slow start, shocking defending, missed chances and ultimately defeat to one of our so-called rivals. The positive is we created plenty in the first half but you can’t miss those chances and expect to get a result at a big team like Chelsea.
Anyway, most people would have written off the first two games anyway so our season starts next week at the Emirates against West Ham…
