£45m star makes it clear he wants to join Arsenal – will a deal be done?

By on May 5, 2020

Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey has made it clear he wants to join Arsenal and it hoping the two clubs can agree a deal this summer, according to the Telegraph newspaper.

Mikel Arteta is expected to strengthen his central midfield options during the summer transfer window as it’s been a problem area for Arsenal once again this campaign and Partey has emerged as a prime candidate.

Widespread reports in recent weeks have suggested that Arteta has made the Ghana international his number one target and Partey’s own father fuelled speculation after confirming talks have taken place over a potential move to the Emirates.

It looks like we’ve received a welcome boost as the Telegraph claims Partey has now informed close friends he wants to join Arsenal in order to prove himself in the Premier League and the defensive midfielder is desperate for a deal to be struck.

Can a deal be done?

Partey would be a fantastic signing but a deal is by no means a foregone conclusion. The 26-year-old’s buy out clause is set at £45m and money is going to be tight at the Emirates this summer due to the financial impact of the current crisis so no doubt Arsenal will hope to drive that price down.

The report suggests that Alexandre Lacazette could be included in some sort of player swap deal and Atletico are seemingly open to the idea as they look to get creative in the market and they have a long standing interest in the Frenchman.

While the Telegraph’s report says Partey is keen on joining Arsenal there must be doubts over his willingness to join a club that isn’t in the Champions League. He’s been playing in Europe’s elite competition with Atletico for several years and won’t want to miss out next season.

Can Arsenal still make the top 4?

Arsenal are currently struggling to qualify for the Europa League, never mind the Champions League. We’re 9th in the Premier League table – 8 points adrift of fourth placed Chelsea – and have already been knocked out of the Europa League.

It’s no wonder many bookmakers have Arsenal priced as the 14/1 outsiders to make the top four – behind the likes of Sheffield United, Wolves, Man Utd and favourites Chelsea. Not many punters will be backing Arsenal to get the job done but some avid fans may feel 14/1 are tempting odds and you could use sign up bonuses to reduce your financial outlay.

The good news is we have a game in hand on Chelsea so could cut the gap to 5 points once football eventually returns [hopefully next month] and we have a fairly decent run-in on paper. There is also the possibility that Man City’s ban is upheld which could lead to fifth place being given a Champions League spot.

That would give Arsenal another shot at returning to Europe’s highest level and we would certainly have a better chance of signing quality players like Partey if we had Champions League football to offer as well as the money it would bring.

    With Arsenal’s funds likely to be limited I have listed an x1 that is highly valuable and available for FREE this summer.

    W.Benitez;
    Meunier,Kouassi,Sarr,Kurzawa;
    Mendy,M.Longstaff;
    Willian,Lallana,Frasier;
    Mertens;

    I believe we could then sell this x1
    Martinez;
    Sokratis,Mustafi,Mavropanos,Kola;
    Elneny,Sheaf;
    Mkhitaryan,Ozil,McEnuff
    Lacazette

    and be not only stronger but in much better position financially to give Saka and Aubameyang decent contracts and to go out and sign the players we want, like Partey

    We could also raise a few quid or save some wages by shifting Macey, Iliev,Hein,Osei-Tutu,Omole,Oluwu, Bola,Tormey and Coyle
