Arsenal favourites to sign £170,000-a-week star after making contact over deal

By on January 8, 2019

According to reports in Italy via the Sun, Arsenal are favourites to sign Yannick Carrasco after making contact over a potential deal to sign the Belgian international this month.

Unai Emery has confirmed he’s in the market for reinforcements during the January window and a new wide attacker is on the agenda after we lost Danny Welbeck for the rest of the season to a broken ankle.

Carrasco has now emerged as a possible target with the Sun citing reports coming from Sky Italia [via Football Italia] as saying that Arsenal are in pole position to sign the Belgian winger after holding initial talks over a deal.

The reports from Italy suggest that Manchester United and AC Milan have also shown an interest in signing Carrasco but have been put off by his current £170,000-a-week wages.

The player only made a £26.5m move to Dalian Yifang last winter but Carrasco is already eyeing a return to Europe and Metro claims the 25-year-old favours a move to Arsenal – although the Chinese Super League side want to recoup all the money they paid 12 months ago.

Sky Sports News are also carrying the story with reporter Dharmesh Sheth saying the following during his transfer update today, as quoted by the Sun:

“Belgium winger Yannick Carrasco could be a fit for Emery. Sky in Italy are reporting Arsenal are interested.”

“Carrasco is currently at Chinese club Dalian Yifang having played for Monaco and Atletico Madrid.”

The usual reports are flying around saying Arsenal have no money but we’ll need to open the wallet if we want to improve the squad and a winger is definitely needed as we have very little natural width in the team.

In fairness, £26.5m is very reasonable for a player of Carrasco’s quality in today’s market and it would be excellent business for Arsenal if we could get him playing like he did during his days with Monaco and Atletico Madrid.

He’s predominately a left winger but he can play anywhere across the attacking midfield positions and has also played as a wing-back for Belgium so his versatility would be a huge asset for Emery if we could get a deal agreed.
