Arsenal boss confirms double injury blow ahead of Red Star Belgrade trip

Arsene Wenger has offered a brief update on Danny Welbeck and Laurent Koscielny after they both picked up injuries during Arsenal’s defeat at Watford on Saturday night.

Welbeck returned from a four-game absence due to a groin injury that he suffered against Chelsea last month and was chosen to start in attack – despite the boss suggesting before the game that he wasn’t 100% match fit yet.

The decision appears to have back-fired as Welbeck went down clutching the back of his leg midway through the second half at Vicarage Road and was replaced by Mesut Ozil in the 61st minute.

Koscielny also made his return from an on-going Achilles problem to start at the back on Saturday evening having missed our previous two games before the international break.

However, the French international also failed to complete the ninety minutes as he limped off during the closing stages to be replaced by Rob Holding.

Wenger has now confirmed that Welbeck has suffered a hamstring injury while Koscielny has picked-up a calf issue – which could be related to his long-standing Achilles problems.

The boss told Arsenal.com:

“It looks to be a hamstring with Welbeck, I don’t really know because everybody is shocked in the dressing room [about the result]. It looks a muscular problem.

“Koscielny is a muscular problem [calf] as well.”

We’ll have to wait for further tests to be conducted before we’ll know the full extent of these injuries but Welbeck and Koscielny are now major doubts for our Europa League trip to Red Star Belgrade on Thursday evening.

Lets pray neither injury is serious as we have some key games coming up against Everton [A], Norwich [H], Swansea [H], Man City [A] and Tottenham [H] over the coming weeks and it would be a major blow to be without Welbeck or Kos.

    Why won’t they go back to injury? They just passes the fitness test and Wenger just introduce them into d starting eleven…. He should have started walcott in dat game

    I wonder what dat assistant coach is doing…. He is just a poster
