Arsenal face competition from Tottenham to sign £50m star

By on July 31, 2017

It looks like Arsenal will face further competition for the signing of Riyad Mahrez as the Mirror are reporting that Tottenham are in the chase to sign the £50m-rated Leicester City attacker.

Mahrez has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates for well over a year as we’ve supposedly renewed our interest this summer after he snubbed our advances 12 months ago.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed he’s still in the market for further reinforcements and a new attacker is on the agenda as Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain continue to be linked with moves away this summer.

Thomas Lemar has widely been touted as our number one target but the Telegraph claim Wenger will turn his attention to signing Mahrez if we can’t get a deal agreed with Monaco for the French international.

We’ve seen a number of bids knocked back by the Ligue 1 champions and they appear determined not to sell another one of their title-winning squad so we may step-up our pursuit of Mahrez over the coming weeks.

Roma have also been strongly linked with the Algerian international, however, we’ll now face further competition as the Mirror are reporting that Tottenham have joined the chase to sign Mahrez.

Mauricio Pochettino is yet to make a single signing this summer but he’s vowed to be active during the final month of the window and it appears Mahrez is now very-much on his radar.

The Mirror claim Leicester are holding out for £50m but I think we’ll see them lower their demands as the 26-year-old has handed in a transfer request and made it clear he wants to leave.

I’m a big fan of Mahrez and think he’d be a superb signing, especially if we can get him back playing like he did during the 2015/16 campaign when he won the PFA Player of the Year award having fired Leicester to the title.

A fee of around £35m-£40m should be enough to persuade the Foxes to sell during the closing stages of the window but I think Wenger will do all he can to land Lemar first before formalising his interest in Mahrez.

Tottenham will be tough competition as they can offer him Champions League football but if the attacker thinks long-term then he’ll choose Arsenal if it comes down to a straight fight between the two north London clubs.
