Arsenal eyeing formal bid for £35m Premier League star

By on July 28, 2017

According to the Telegraph, Arsenal maintain an interest in signing Riyad Mahrez and could make a formal move for the Leicester City attacker if we miss out on Thomas Lemar.

Arsene Wenger is in the market for another attacker after only making two new signings this summer and Lemar is widely considered to be the bosses number one target.

However, we’re struggling to agree terms with Monaco for the 21-year-old and the Ligue 1 champions are adamant they won’t be bullied in to selling any more of their title-winning squad.

Wenger is still pushing to get a deal agreed for the French international, however, the Telegraph claim he could yet turn his attention to Mahrez if Monaco refuse to do business.

The newspaper says Arsenal maintain an interest in the Leicester City attacker and are considering making our interest official by testing Leicester’s resolve with a firm offer.

Mahrez has long been linked with a move to the Emirates and Wenger has admitted several times in the past that he’s a huge admirer of the Algerian international’s.

The 26-year-old is expected to leave the King Power stadium after handing in a transfer request and The Sun reported earlier this month that he was desperate to secure a move to north London 12 months after snubbing our advances.

The report says that while Leicester are holding out for around £50m, a deal should be done at nearer £35m making Mahrez a much cheaper alternative to Lemar.

In my opinion, Lemar would be the more exciting signing as he has the potential to be a real star but Mahrez is a more than capable alternative and should be easier to acquire.

The Algerian has also got vital experience in the Premier League and was outstanding during the 2015/16 campaign when he helped fire Leicester to their stunning title win.

His form dipped last season but that was understandable and he’d be a superb addition to the squad if we could get him back playing like he did when he won the PFA Player of the Year Award in 2016.
