Arsenal boost as Bayern Munich star suffers training ground injury
According to a report in the Mirror, Bayern Munich star Xabi Alonso has picked up a knee injury in training just two days before their Champions League clash with Arsenal.
The newspaper quotes German outlet Bild as saying that Alonso was unable to complete Monday’s training session and left the pitch looking in considerable pain.
The former Liverpool midfielder supposedly had to be carted off the training pitches in a golf buggy to undergo treatment and further assessment on the problem.
The 35-year-old is now a doubt for our Champions League last-16 first leg tie at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, which will come as a real concern to Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti.
However, it would be excellent news for Arsenal if Alonso is ruled out as he’s a key player in Munich’s team having featured in 23 games so far this season.
Bayern will already be without Frank Ribery and central defender Jerome Boateng as they are carrying injuries so they’d be without three key players should Alonso join them on the sidelines.
Obviously we have our own injury concerns to worry about with Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey unavailable but it will be a big boost if Bayern lose Alonso, and let’s be honest we could do with all the luck we can get.
It’s going to be a tall order to beat the German champions over two legs, especially the way we’ve been playing lately, but hopefully Saturday’s win over Hull will give the players a much-needed confidence boost.
