Arsenal board wanted this man to replace under-fire Wenger

According to the Daily Mail, the Arsenal board felt Pep Guardiola was the ‘ideal’ replacement for Arsene Wenger but missed out as he’s agreed to take over at Manchester City this summer.

Wenger’s future has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks as a run of just three wins in our last 10 games in all competitions has seen our season implode in spectacular fashion.

We’re on the verge of once again exiting the Champions League at the last-16 stage as we head in to tomorrow night’s second leg with Barcelona needing to turn around a 2-0 home loss.

The pressure on Arsene’s shoulder’s intensified on Sunday as we crashed out of the FA Cup with a 2-1 home defeat to Watford, which led to unsavory scenes with fans clashing outside of the Emirates after the game.

Having been two points clear at the top of the table at the start of January, our Premier League title challenge has capitulated with just two wins from nine games leaving us trailing Leicester by 11 points [with a game in hand].

It’s no wonder then that fans are calling for Arsene Wenger’s head but so far the board have failed to act and the Daily Mail claim that owner Stan Kronke is still fully behind the beleaguered boss and feels he’s earned the right to decide his own future.

The paper does, however, suggest that Wenger could decide to walk away if fans continue to demand for his resignation with growing numbers feeling it’s time the 66-year-old called-time on his reign in North London.

The Daily Mail state that Arsenal are already putting contingency plans in place in-case Arsene does decide to leave and the board supposedly felt that Pep Guardiola was the ‘ideal’ man to replace the Frenchman.

However, unfortunately we didn’t even make contact with the Spaniard’s representatives and watched-on as the former Barcelona coach agreed to take over at Manchester City this summer.

Once again, our failure to act has seen us miss out on what would have been a major coup. The board should have at least made our interest known to Guardiola’s camp when he went public about his decision to leave Bayern last year.

There have been plenty of reports suggesting that Pep would have been keen on coming to the Emirates so he might have waited a little while longer to see how things went at Arsenal before committing to City.

Now, just weeks after Guardiola agreed to take over from Pellegrini, our season has collapsed and there’s a decent chance we’ll need a new manager this summer, but we’ve already missed out on our No.1 target.

It’s certainly going to be an interesting couple of months and I personally don’t see how Wenger can continue as boss if/when we miss out on the title, especially if Tottenham end of winning it.

Speculation is already circulating over who could replace the boss with Diego Simeone and Ronald Koeman two of the front-runners, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Frank De Boer come in with Dennis Bergkamp as his assistant.

    What ever it is,it would be utterly folly of Arsenal to continue
    with the fm.Now he says Arsenal can win the epl.Well.Well.
    Remember the seasons when Arsenal led with 5/8 points and a number of games to spare.I doubt he can conjure the great escape act.
    Ranieri is a more pragmatic guy and I would put my money on him to finish the job. The fm by his repeated failures has shown he cannot be trusted likewise.
    Time for change asap.
