Wilshere Injury Update: Our Worst Fears Have Been Confirmed

By on November 26, 2014

Unfortunately, it looks like our worst fears have been confirmed with Jack Wilshere is set for another long spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

Jack was forced off early on in the second half against Man Utd on Saturday after receiving a shocking tackle from Paddy McNair – which went unpunished I may add.

Arsene Wenger gave little away about the severity of the injury in his post-match interviews but fears grew over Jack’s condition after he was pictured wearing a protective boot on Sunday night.

Rumours then began to circulate online on Monday that Jack was set for a spell on the treatment table with Twitter user @ElliotAFS claiming that an inside source had told him the midfielder had suffered ligament damage.

Many scoffed at these claims and pointed to the fact that many mainstream newspapers were suggesting the injury was minor and Jack would be back inside two weeks.

However, it turns out @ElliotAFS was spot on and our fears have been realised after Arsene revealed at his press conference yesterday that Wilshere had in fact suffered ligament damage.

The boss stopped short of putting a definitive time-scale on his return as he wants to wait until after the 22-year-old sees a specialist next week, but he did admit the injury didn’t look good and he would be out for a few weeks at least.

‘It does not look good,’ Wenger said.

‘There is no bone damage but there is ligament damage. It is just how [long] it is, which we should know next week.

‘It is so sad because he just came back and had found his mobility. I hope it will not be surgery, just in a boot, but it will be a few weeks.’ [source: Daily Mail]

The Daily Mail claim that if Jack does need surgery then he’ll be ruled out for four months. Even if he avoids the need to operate, the newspaper suggests it will be around three months before the midfielder is back playing again.

These estimates may seem a little pessimistic, as most other newspapers feel Jack could be back in 8 weeks if he doesn’t have surgery or three months if he does, but either way we’re now set to be without another first team regular for the foreseeable future.

I’m running out of things to say regarding our injury record as it’s all been said before. It’s now got to a point where I just laugh when a player is ruled out for three months. It’s become the norm.

Just as Giroud comes back from a three month lay-off, Jack is ruled out. The injury merry-go-round at Arsenal never stops and until we figure out how to keep our players fits, we have next to no chance of challenging for the title.

I am all for criticising the team and medics when players are clearly over-played, burnt out, or injure themselves in re-habilitation – but all i can see now is contact injuries – from bad fouls – which usually go un-punished!!! This is ridiculous. Without Ozil, Walcott, Giroud, Debuchy, and Ospina, we are a much weaker team, cannot rotate, and have less tactical options!

One must admit is not helping himself by diving into tackles. Players who keep decent injury records try to perfect their timing instead of diving and either committing unnecessary fouls or injury. For Wilshere to become a great player, he must play safe. Flamini is suffering from the same sickness and that’s why his injury record in Italy was so high.
