Done Deal! Arsenal Secure First Signing, Deal Confirmed After WC

By on July 2, 2014

It appears Arsenal have already secured their first summer signing with reports today claiming that we’ve agreed a £12m deal to sign Newcastle defender Mathieu Debuchy.

Obviously we’re in the market for a right-back following the departure of Bacary Sagna to Manchester City and despite being heavily linked with Serge Aurier in recent weeks, Debuchy has now emerged as his likely replacement.

Reports last week suggested Arsene Wenger had stepped up his interest in the 28-year-old and Debuchy did little to dampen the speculation after questioning his Newcastle future and admitting he missed playing in the Champions League. He said last week:

“I miss European football and the Champions League in particular.

“For the moment, I’m concentrating on the World Cup. We’ll see about the rest afterwards.”

The Daily Star are now reporting today that we’ve agreed a £12m fee with the Geordies and the deal will be confirmed after he’s fulfilled his duties at the World Cup.

With France playing Germany on Friday night there’s a chance Didier Deschamps men could be heading home this weekend, so if these reports are accurate, then the transfer could be officially announced as early as next week.

While I like the idea of an exciting youngster like Aurier coming in this summer, Debuchy may be the more sensible option. He’s far more experienced and has played in the Premier League, so he’ll have no adaptation time.

The signing of Debuchy would also be good news for Carl Jenkinson as he wouldn’t pose a long-term threat to his position and he’s a player the former Charlton man could learn from for a couple of seasons before hopefully taking over.

It would be a solid, if unspectacular, start to the summer but we’ve got plenty of time left to make those big-money signings the fans are waiting for.
