Confirmed: Arsenal announce signing of Lucas Torreira in £25m deal
Arsenal have completed the signing of Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria in a deal worth a reported £25m – as per an announcement on Arsenal.com today.
Torreira has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates over the past month after news emerged that we’d agreed a deal with Sampdoria before the World Cup.
The defensive midfielder decided against taking his medical during the tournament as he wanted to concentrate on representing Uruguay but everything was in place for the deal to be completed once he was finished in Russia.
Torreira didn’t travel back to South America at the weekend after they were knocked out by France in the quarter-finals as he instead flew to London to wrap-up his move to Arsenal.
The 22-year-old reportedly completed his medical at London Colney on Monday and Arsenal have finally announced his signing on Arsenal.com with Torreira penning a long-term contract.
The club haven’t disclosed the fee but the Daily Mail claim we’ve paid Sampdoria around £25m and Torreira has been handed the No.11 shirt for the upcoming campaign.
After completing his latest big-money signing, boss Unai Emery told the clubs website:
“In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game. A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup. He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing. We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season.”
Torreira will now be given a post World Cup break before meeting up with his new team mates in early August and I think he’s going to be an excellent addition to the squad.
The youngster has been one of the best defensive midfielders in Italian football over the past two years so we’ll finally have some protection in front of the back four next season.
