Perfect signing: Arsenal identify £53m star as key summer target

By on May 14, 2018

According to the Express, Arsenal have identified Kalidou Koulibaly as a key transfer target this summer as we look to tighten up our shambolic defence ahead of next season.

Once again, a leaky back four cost Arsenal dear this campaign as we conceded a ridiculous 51 goals in our 38 Premier League games – which is the most we’ve let in since 1983/84.

Whoever replaces Arsene Wenger as manager has plenty to sort out but fixing our broken defence needs to be a priority if we’re to become genuine contenders any time soon.

We need to sign at least one, if not two, central defenders as Per Mertesacker has retired and Laurent Koscielny’s best days are behind him with the soon-to-be 33-year-old out for around 6 months with an Achilles injury.

Shkodran Mustafi has been a disastrous signing from Valencia and while there is potential in Rob Holding and Calum Chambers, neither have shown they are the answer to our defensive problems yet.

So we need a dominant centre-back this summer and it looks like we’ve identified the perfect man for the job as the Express claim Arsenal chiefs want to sign Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli.

The 6ft 4in defender has been excellent since joining Napoli four years ago and I think the Senegal international would be a superb addition to the squad if we could lure him to north London.

However, quality players don’t come cheap and the Express claim that as Koulibaly has three years left on his contract, Napoli are demanding around £53m for his signature.

Arsenal have plenty of money in the bank but a second year without Champions League football could limit our transfer kitty this summer and I’m not sure we will stretch to £53m for a defender.

Hopefully the club surprise us all and pay the going rate for a world class player as Koulibaly would make a huge difference to this team, but I’m not getting my hopes up just yet.
