[Player Ratings] Man Utd 2-1 Arsenal: Mavropanos stars but Xhaka disappoints

By on April 29, 2018

A young Arsenal side put in a spirited performance but fell to a stoppage-time Marouane Fellaini header as Manchester United won 2-1 at Old Trafford this afternoon.

United opened the scoring through Paul Pogba before Henrikh Mkhitaryan fired home an equaliser shortly after half time. It looked like we were going to grind out a point but Fellaini came off the bench to head home a stoppage time winner to inflict another away defeat on Arsenal.

Here are my ratings:

Ospina  6/10 | Could do  little to prevent either goal – although you feel a slightly taller keeper would have got a touch on the Fellaini header.

Bellerin  7/10 | Unlucky to see his block cannon off the post straight to Pogba for the opener. A threat down the right at times.

Chambers  8/10 | One of his best displays of the season. Seemed to like being the more senior centre-back and didn’t put a foot wrong.

Mavropanos  8/10 | Hugely impressive debut, especially under the circumstances. Composed, good positioning, good in the air and wasn’t fazed by the occasion. What a prospect we have.

Kolasinac  6/10 | A few stray passes but solid enough before he limped off with an injury.

Xhaka  5/10 | Woeful attempted tackle to stop Pogba in the build-up to the opener and was fortunate not to be sent off. Set-up the equaliser but lost out to Fellaini for their winner.

Maitland-Niles  7.5/10 | Should have had a first half penalty but held his own in the middle of the park. Cool, calm and composed on the ball. Really impressive display by the youngster.

Iwobi  6.5/10 | Not a bad performance in a more central role. Showed some good touches in the first half but final pass was still lacking.

Nelson  6/10 | A few bright passages of play but final ball was lacking at times. Another great prospect for the future.

Mkhitaryan  7.5/10 | A few nice moments in the first half but lovely finish after the break to make it 1-1. Always keen to impress against his former side.

Aubameyang  6/10 | Fluffed a good headed chance to equalise and struggled to find any space to influence things in the final third.

Subs:

Welbeck 6/10, Monreal 6/10, Willock N/A

Overall, it was a very encouraging performance from our young players as they held their own at one of the toughest grounds in Europe but ultimately we fell short and still haven’t won a point on the road in 2018.

We desperately need to rectify our away form on Thursday night when we take on Atletico Madrid….
